At the heart of these demonstrations was growing alarm over what many perceive as a concerted campaign to dismantle essential federal institutions, reduce the size and role of the federal government, and roll back fundamental rights and protections, particularly for marginalized communities. The administration’s measures have sparked outrage, criticism, and widespread concern, culminating in the mass protest now known as the “Hands Off!” movement. Since returning to the presidency in January 2025, President Donald Trump—with the support of Musk, who was appointed to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—has embarked on an aggressive campaign to restructure the federal government.
