 India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to Aid Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake

In response to the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, March 29, 2025, India has swiftly initiated Operation Brahma’, a large-scale humanitarian relief mission aimed at assisting the affected communities. The disaster has claimed over 1,000 lives and left more than 2,000 people injured, prompting Myanmar’s authorities to seek international aid. The Government of India, through its Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), has dispatched 15 tonnes of relief materials via a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon. The emergency aid package includes essential supplies such as tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and life-saving medicines to support survivors and rescue efforts.

On Saturday, March 30, 2025, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced the launch of Operation Brahma via social media platform X, stating that India has once again stepped up as the first responder to 

provide immediate assistance to its neighbouring country. “Operation Brahma – India acts as a first responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday’s massive earthquake. Our first tranche of 15 tonnes of relief material has landed in Yangon, Jaiswal said.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also emphasized India’s commitment to extending support, mentioning that the aid package consists of solar lamps, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, and medical supplies, alongside a search and rescue team and medical personnel to provide on-ground assistance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep concern over the tragedy, reaffirming India’s commitment to aiding Myanmar during this difficult time. Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance, PM Modi stated.

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar has been actively coordinating with local officials to ensure the smooth delivery of aid and necessary supplies. In a statement posted on X, the embassy assured swift action, stating: Following yesterday’s devastating earthquake, we are coordinating the speedy delivery of assistance and relief supplies from India with Myanmar authorities. We are also in constant touch with the Indian community. Reiterate our emergency helpline number for needy Indian nationals: +95-95419602.The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, has resulted in significant destruction across residential areas, schools, monasteries, and infrastructure. The Myanmar military junta has reported 1,002 confirmed deaths, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the rubble. More than 2,000 people have been injured, and many more are feared trapped.

 

Several countries and international organizations have responded to Myanmar’s call for aid. The United Nations (UN) has announced a $5 million emergency relief fund, while countries including Russia, China, Thailand, and India have stepped up to provide medical teams, search-and-rescue personnel, and essential supplies.

India has a history of swift humanitarian responses to crises in the region. In previous disasters, such as the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2018 Kerala floods, and COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts, India demonstrated its commitment to regional solidarity and disaster relief diplomacy. With Operation Brahma, India once again showcases its strategic leadership in humanitarian aid, reinforcing its position as a reliable first responder in South Asia.
