In a significant move to strengthen its air force, India is reportedly planning to buy at least 20 squadrons on an immediate basis and other 20 squadrons within 5 years. As per defence specialists, 50-60 squadrons of fighter jets are the requirements of the Indian Air Force at present. This massive procurement plan is aimed at modernizing the Indian Air Force (IAF) and enhancing its combat capabilities. The proposed acquisition is part of India’s ambitious plan to expand its military capabilities and assert its position as a regional power. The IAF currently operates around 30 squadrons of fighter jets, which are a mix of indigenous and imported aircraft.
The IAF’s existing fleet is comprised of ageing MiG-21 and MiG-27 aircraft, which are being phased out. The force is also operating the indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which has faced development delays and production issues. The acquisition of new fighter jets is crucial to address the IAF’s dwindling squadron strength and to counter the growing military capabilities of neighbouring countries, particularly China and Pakistan.
Several global aerospace majors, including Lockheed Martin (F-35), Russian Sukhoi Su-57, Dassault Aviation (Rafale) and Saab (Gripen), are likely to compete for the lucrative deal. According to experts, though the F-35 inclusion in the Indian air force will require a lot of changes and is on the costlier side than the Su-57, India needs to include the F-35 into the fleet. The IAF has already begun the process of
evaluating the bids, with a focus on factors such as performance, maintenance costs, and technology transfer.
The acquisition of 50-60 squadrons of fighter jets is what is required and around 150 fighter jets are being taken into consideration. But, 150 fighter jets are not a small number, these fighter jets will not only enhance the IAF’s combat capabilities but also provide a significant boost to India’s defence industry. The deal is expected to create thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly, and stimulate the growth of the domestic aerospace sector.
While the proposed acquisition is a significant step towards modernizing the IAF, it also poses several challenges. The deal’s massive cost will require significant budgetary allocations. Additionally, the IAF will need to address the challenges of integrating the new aircraft into its existing fleet, as well as providing training to its pilots and maintenance personnel.
India’s plan to acquire 150 fighter jets is a significant move towards strengthening its air power and enhancing its national security. While the deal poses several challenges, its benefits will far outweigh the costs, providing a major boost to the IAF’s combat capabilities and India’s defence industry.
