The conflict between Israel and Hamas has escalated significantly, with the Israeli military launching extensive airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza. These strikes, described as the most violent since the ceasefire agreement began on January 19, 2025, have resulted in over 100 fatalities. The renewed violence comes amid a breakdown in negotiations on how to sustain the three-phase ceasefire that was meant to bring stability to the region. Israeli defence officials claim that the latest strikes were in retaliation for Hamas’ alleged attempts to rebuild its military infrastructure and launch sporadic attacks on Israeli border areas. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they targeted Hamas’ command centers, underground tunnels, and weapons storage facilities.
The escalation of violence raises concerns about the collapse of the ceasefire and the possibility of a prolonged conflict.
