This deal aligns with Washington’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on China for rare earth materials, which play a vital role in the production of semiconductors, electric vehicle batteries, and military equipment. By securing mineral supplies from Ukraine, the U.S. aims to bolster its supply chains while simultaneously supporting Ukraine’s economy.
Zelensky’s Conditions: U.S. Military Presence in Ukraine
Despite the potential economic benefits, Zelensky has reportedly expressed concerns over Ukraine’s security amid the ongoing war with Russia. He has signalled that he would only move forward with the mineral agreement if the U.S. commits to deploying military forces or providing direct security assurances to Ukraine.
