Justin Trudeau has insisted that Canadian Universities expand their focus on other countries rather than only recruiting Indian students. Canada has been sharing a strained relationship with India for a very long time. Starting on September 2023, Justin Trudeau accused India of killing Khalistani terrorist Hardip Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. He also attacked the Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma quoting him as a man of interests on which India acted briskly expelling 6 Canadian diplomats.
Within a span of around 9 years, from 2015-2024, over 1.3 Million Indian students received permits to study in Canada. Indian students contribute to a large workforce in Canada. They provide student visas, train those students hire them and make them work as per their norms. Canada’s education system has gained significant improvements with Indian students. The Indians working there pay taxes automatically boosting their local economy. Hypocrisy should have some limits but, Justin Trudeau has crossed the limits, he is now trying to remove those from whom Canada has once benefitted. Canada’s immigration minister Mark Miller disseminated the words of the government saying, that universities

to expand the radius of admission and focus elsewhere besides India. He said,” I would say universities and colleges have been going to one or two sources of countries and constantly going back to the well on that and we expect the diversity of students”. Trying to mediate the direct attack, he also added,” That doesn’t mean the Indian students aren’t some of the best and brightest indeed, (as) one of the largest populations in the world, you would expect students come from India. But, have asked universities and colleges to put a little more effort
into the price of acquisition and to invest more in the talent that you’re bringing here, and that includes going to more countries and expanding your resources”.
Not only trying to backstab the Indian students, they further planned to throw those Indian students out of Canada. Mark Miller adds,” We will not be doing what the Administration of US President Donald Trump is doing about illegal immigrants. If you are here in an irregular fashion and don’t have a right to stay, you need to leave or you will be removed” directly posing a threat to the students with expiring post-graduate work permits.
What is Canada trying to do next?
