GREENLAND AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE FOR AMERICA

The US and Trumph has been trying to get Greenland since a long time now. Donald Trumph has shown his interest in Greenland since 2019, when the United States first tried to purchase Greenland knowing that the Island belongs to the Danish Kingdom and Denmark continuously stressing on the fact that the Greenland is not for sale. President Donald Trumph has said the US will gain Greenland after showing interest in autonomous Danish Territory. The US president said, “the 56,000 residents want to be with us”, claiming that the 56,000 residents of the Greenland want to be with the United States. Earlier, Chinese owned company has shown significant interest in establishing two airports on Greenland. The question arises why? Why is the world so much interested in Greenland? A few people might think that it’s a mere island with most of its areas being covered with snow and not at all an ideal location for people to move to.
The reasons for which Greenland possess significant importance for the rest of the World and especially The US are:
- Its strategic location: Its location is a prominent factor that has gained significant importance. The GIUK gap between Greenland, Iceland and the UK acts as a strategic route act as a strategic route for America and The NATO in containing Russia’s naval forces and stop a potential threat. The world is long aware of Russian naval forces and its power and that is what US is also concerned of. Earlier the Greenland has been an important part for America’s ballistic missiles warning system allowing them to get early warning of Soviet’s missile launch or bomb attacks.
- Economic opportunities: Greenland has been a strategically important for Arctic shipping that has shown a significant increase by 37% in between 2013-23.
- Earth metals: Greenland is home to various natural resources basically on its Central and Southern parts. A huge percentage of Uranium, Iron, Cobalt, Zinc, Lithium and various valuable stones. Of the 34 metals declared by the US as rare earth metals, around 24 are found on Greenland and an estimated of 1.5m tons of earth metals present in Greenland. These earth metals are used in various parts of vehicles and possess significant importance for the automobile industries. China being one of the leading countries to possess rare earth metals and China has further banned exports of a number of rare earth metals.
The Greenland authorities has repeatedly said that the Greenland was never for sale, is not for sale and will never be for sale in the coming future. Recently, the Greenland has shown its importance in strengthening its military and its internal security with the US but, on Greenland’s terms and condition.
Though the Greenland has repeatedly denied for its sale and it’s never possible but, Timph has stressed that Greenland is going to be with the United States. Now, if the President of the United States has stated that Greenland is going to be with the US, there are significant ground possible for people to believe.
